Barack Obama has announced that three sites significant in the civil rights struggle of the 1960s will be designated US national monuments. He says the move is designed to honour the country's civil rights history and to help promote diversity, things he has said he has tried to do throughout his time in the White House. But just as some Americans feel he has been an agent of huge progress on racial equality, millions feel he has exacerbated divisions.
